You can use clear plastic to warm up the soil before planting.Ī raised bed is also a good option to warm the soil in early spring because germination could take 2-3 weeks if soil temperatures are below 50☏ (10☌). Plant them outside as early as 4-6 weeks before the last frost date in your area, or as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. We have an article with a step-by-step video explaining the paper towel method here.įor most regions, spring is the right time to start planting peas. Simply spread your seeds evenly over a piece of moist paper towel, then fold the towel carefully, and place it inside a resealable plastic bag until they start germinating. One of the best ways to pre-germinate your seeds is to use the paper towel (or baggie) method. You need to plant them right after taking them out of the water, as they can’t be dried out and stored again. To soak your seeds, place them in a container with water for 8-12 hours, but no more than 24 hours to avoid rotting. To help your seeds, you can either soak them to speed up germination or pre-germinate them before planting them in the soil. Pea seeds could fail to germinate properly if the soil is too cold in spring or too hot in summer. There are cold-hardy and heat-tolerant varieties available, so you should use the right type for each season. In areas with short growing seasons, they are planted in the early spring months, 4-6 weeks before the last frost date, or in late summer, 8-10 weeks before the first frost date in your area. In places with mild winters, peas can be grown almost any month. To plant your peas outside, it is better to wait until soil temperatures have warmed up to 40☏ (4.4 ☌) or higher, for better germination. However, if temperatures drop below 25☏ (-3.8 ☌) they could die. Peas are defined as a cool-season crop and they can tolerate a light frost. They can be continuously harvested for 3-6 weeks, but it is important to cut the pods before the seeds mature, or the plants will decline faster. Normally, pea plants need around 60-100 days to go from seed to harvest, but throughout their lifetime they will produce many flowers and pods. The three most common types of peas are garden peas (also known as English peas, sweet peas, shell peas, or green peas), sugar snap peas (also known as snap peas), and snow peas (also known as Chinese pea pods or mangetout). This simply means that you have to plant them again in your garden every time. Most pea plants complete their life cycle in one year (annuals), and will not come back every year as perennials do. Peas belong to the Fabaceae family with beans, lentils, and soybean.
